Roseann Gedye is the founder of her own communication advisory service known as Roseann's Principles Ltd. She is a sought-after consultant in industry, particularly in the areas of communication, leadership, change and motivation. With thirty years of educational experience, Roseann has written and presented a number of communication and educational programmes. Also, she has spent some five years working as a member of the management team for Success Motivation International.
I began my career in education as a primary school teacher in the mid-1970's. Working in both the state and private sector, I moved through a number of positions of responsibility. These included Senior Teacher, Deputy Principal, Acting Principal and Music Specialist.
My love of teaching has been a constant.
In 1989 I was involved in a serious car accident, which changed the whole direction of my life. Having to retire from teaching due to ill health, I took up a position as Director of
the Success Motivation Institute. Here I explored the facilitation of programmes for adults in the fields of Motivation, Goal Setting, Communication Skills, Vision Setting and Personal Leadership. At this time I also involved myself in a young persons’ leadership development organisation, known as Jaycees. I became the first woman in the (then) forty-nine year history of the organisation to become the President of New Zealand Jaycees. It was a wonderful experience!
In the early 1990's I went on to become elected as a Junior Chamber International Vice-President. My assignment was: Tunisia; Algeria; Morocco; Senegal; Côte D’Ivoire; Burkina Faso; Nigeria; Benin; Congo; Zaire; Gabon; Mali; Guinee; and South Africa – deepest, darkest French-speaking Africa. With one year to lead, I travelled extensively, teaching leadership to young people in these African countries. A mind-blowing and very humbling experience. As I taught, I learnt. And as I learnt, I taught.
I hankered for academia, and in the mid-1990's I gained a position as Senior Lecturer at the UNITEC Institute of Technology. Here I took on the role of delivering the only generic paper on campus: Communication Principles and Practices. I was fortunate to work with a highly creative team who developed the Bachelor of International Communication – the first of its kind in the world. Simply amazing!
To maintain my position in academia, I enrolled in the Masters of Management Studies in the University of Waikato. My thesis focused on the rhetoric used to frame change in large organisations. I gained a Masters majoring in Management Communication – with Distinction. A wonderful graduation was had by all – colleagues, family and graduates.
In early 2000, Roseann's Principles Ltd. was born. Initially I split my time between lecturing at UNITEC and consulting, but as my client list grew and my appointment book filled, I realised that it was time to make it a full-time commitment. So since 2004, it's been simply me: Roseann. Roseann's Principles Ltd.
